Endoscopic Procedures

Endoscopy can be both diagnostic and therapeutic. In other words, endoscopy allows your doctor to identify and determine how to best treat conditions that appear in the upper or lower part of your digestive system. Endoscopy is the best means of early detection for several forms of cancer.
During the procedure, a variety of instruments can be passed through the working channel of an endoscope, permitting your doctor to treat many digestive problems with little or no discomfort to you. During the procedure, throughout which you will be sedated, your doctor can open narrowed areas of the esophagus or stomach, remove polyps and swallowed objects, or treat upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Endoscopy is frequently used in conjunction with major abdominal surgery to treat bleeding, greatly reducing the need for post-surgical blood transfusions.
